Kirguistán. El tesoro escondido de la región, la nueva Meca de los montañeros. La capital del país (Bishkek) bien merece un par de días: una ciudad tranquila y confortable, de largos bulevares y numerosos edificios y monumentos de la era soviética, situada al pie de suntuosas montañas nevadas.

The capital of the country (Bishkek) is well worth a couple of days: a quiet and comfortable city at the foot of sumptuous snow-capped mountains, with long boulevards and numerous buildings and monuments from the Soviet era.
A una hora de distancia se encuentra la Torre Burana, uno de los símbolos históricos del país. Desde allí se puede acceder fácilmente a Issyk-kul, uno de los lagos más grandes del mundo, con una longitud de 200 km. El inmenso lago, escenario de pruebas y maniobras militares durante la época de la URSS, es una base en torno a la cual se pueden realizar múltiples actividades: trekking a las Montañas Tian Shan (las llamadas Montañas Celestiales), baños en aguas termales naturales, paseos a caballo, visitas a comunidades nómadas durmiendo en sus características yurtas o cetrería con águilas.
A short hour away from it is the Burana Tower, one of the historical symbols of the country. From there you can easily access Issyk-kul, one of the largest lakes in the world with a length of 200 km. The immense lake, scenario of tests and military maneuvers during the USSR, is a basic site around which many activities can be undertaken: trekking to the Tian Shan Mountains (the so-called Celestial Mountains), bathing in natural hot springs, horseback riding, meeting nomads and sleeping in their characteristic yurts, falconry with eagles…

Son Kul es un lago alpino de postal, aunque a diferencia del anterior, permanece congelado gran parte del año. Una visita en verano es una experiencia inolvidable. Desde allí, una ruta por carretera hacia el sur descubre la difícil orografía del país, pero también la increíble belleza de sus paisajes. Se pueden visitar pueblos escondidos, donde sus habitantes brindan al viajero una hospitalidad difícil de igualar. Arslanbob es una de esas pequeñas joyas pintorescas.

The south of the country is an area of enormous cultural wealth, with a great variety of ethnic groups. Kazakhstan. Huge country (the ninth in the world in area), with an amazing landscape and cultural variety. Almaty (the former Soviet Alma-Ata) has become a large city with long avenues and luxurious shopping centers, which alternate with vestiges of its past in the form of imposing monuments from its time as an integral part of the USSR. Its location, at the foot of an impressive mountain range, gives it a special appeal.
Almaty se encuentra en el sur del país, cerca de la frontera con Kirguistán. La frontera natural entre los dos países es una de las zonas más bellas de Asia Central. A tan solo dos horas de la ciudad se encuentra uno de los lugares más interesantes del país, el Cañón del río Charyn, un lugar sencillamente espectacular, que goza de un microclima increíble y fue frontera con China hasta hace 150 años.
Almaty is located in the south of the country, near the border with Kyrgyzstan. The natural border between the two countries is one of the most beautiful areas in Central Asia. Just two hours from the city is one of the most interesting places in the country, the Charyn River Canyon, a simply spectacular place, which enjoys an amazing microclimate and was the border with China until 150 years ago.
En misma región se pueden visitar otras dos maravillas naturales: los tres lagos Kolsai, rodeados de montañas y bosques, refugio de una fauna abundante de zorros, lobos, osos y hasta de los esquivos leopardos de las nieves y el extraño lajo Kaindy, surgido de manera inesperada tras un fortísimo movimiento de tierras, que hizo sumergirse a un bosque entero.
In the same region, you can visit two other natural wonders: the three Kolsai Lakes, surrounded by mountains and forests, a refuge for an abundant fauna of foxes, wolves, bears and even the elusive snow leopards and the strange Kaindy Lake, emerged unexpectedly after a massive earth movement, which made an entire forest submerge.
La mayor parte del territorio kazajo es una extensa estepa, a medio camino entre el desierto y el páramo, que regala al visitante unas vistas sorprendentes: caballos sobre un fondo de montañas nevadas, lagos interminables o camellos solitarios en medio de la nada. Las distancias son largas, una oportunidad para viajar en tren desde la populosa Almaty hasta la nueva capital Astana, rebautizada como Nur-Sultan en honor al primer presidente del país. La nueva capital es un ejemplo de planificación urbana, diseñada gracias a los fondos provenientes del subsuelo kazajo, rico en petróleo y gas. Most of the Kazakh territory is an extensive steppe, halfway between desert and wasteland, which gives the visitor some amazing sights: horses against a background of snowy mountains, endless lakes or solitary camels in the middle of nowhere. The distances are long, an opportunity to travel by train from populous Almaty to the new capital Astana, renamed Nur-Sultan in honor of the first president. The new capital is an example of urban planning, designed thanks to the funds coming from the rich-in-oil-and-gas Kazakh subsoil. There is no lack of imposing masterpieces, signed by some of the main architects of the 20th century. Kazakhstan has also been the starting point for the Soviet Union’s aerospace adventure, and continues to be, through the International Space Station in Baikonur. The country was also, many years ago, the scene of Soviet nuclear tests and concentration camps for dissidents, the gulag, such as the Alzhir, exclusive for women and children, near Astana. Desierto, mar y tren… Ruta de 10 días / Desert, sea and train… 10-day route
Desde el aeropuerto internacional de Nouakchott, nos dirigimos al hotel y pasamos la primera noche en la capital del país. Al día siguiente por la mañana, visitamos el mercado de camellos cercano a la ciudad, recorremos el centro y, por la tarde, disfrutamos de la experiencia del puerto pesquero, donde al atardecer, las coloridas embarcaciones artesanales regresan a la playa cargadas de pescado fresco.
From Nouakchott international airport, we go to the hotel and spend the first night in the country’s capital. The next day in the morning will visit the camel market near the city, will explore the center, and in the afternoon will enjoy the experience of the fishing port, where at sunset, the colorful artisanal boats return to the beach loaded with fresh fish.
El tercer día vamos en vehículos 4×4 hasta el oasis de Terjit, donde almorzamos y paseamos por sus desfiladeros y por el peculiar huerto que esconde su enorme palmeral. Más tarde, el mismo día, nos dirigimos a la ciudad de Chinguetti, en medio del desierto, una maravilla medieval “siempre amenazada” por las dunas de arena que la rodean. Chinquetti, conocida como “la Sorbona del Sahara” por sus antiguas bibliotecas, será el campo base para explorar la zona de Adrar, la joya de Mauritania. Desde allí conoceremos el entorno: las dunas cercanas a Tanouchert, la ciudad fortaleza de Ouadane y el famoso Ojo de África, durante el cuarto y quinto día de viaje.
On the third day, we head in 4×4 vehicles to the oasis of Terjit, where we have lunch and walk through its gorges and through the unusual orchard that hides its enormous palm grove. Later the same day we go to the city of Chinguetti, in the middle of the desert, a medieval wonder always threatened by the sand dunes that surround it. Chinquetti, known as “the Sorbonne of the Sahara” for its ancient libraries, will be the base camp to explore the Adrar area, the jewel of Mauritania. From there we will get to know the surroundings: the dunes near Tanouchert, the fortress city of Ouadane and the famous Eye of Africa, during the fourth and fifth days of the trip.

El sexto día nos levantamos temprano para dirigirnos hacia la segunda roca monolítica más grande del mundo, Ben Amira, y su hermana pequeña, Aisha. Desde allí continuamos hasta la ciudad minera de Zouerate, en el norte del país.
On the sixth day, we get up early and head towards the second largest monolithic rock in the world, Ben Amira, and its little sister, Aisha. From there we continue to the mining city of Zouerate, in the north of the country.

El séptimo día es el de la aventura única: el tren de hierro. Tras conseguir los suministros necesarios, comienza la aventura a bordo del tren más largo del mundo, de 3 km de longitud, en un vagón cargado de grava o mineral de hierro. Una tarde y una noche por el gran desierto del Sahara, con el único techo del cielo estrellado hasta la ciudad de Nouadhibou, a orillas del Océano Atlántico, después de haber recorrido los 700 km de la gloria.
The seventh day is the one of the unique adventure: the iron train. After getting the necessary supplies, the adventure begins aboard the longest train in the world, 3 km long, on a wagon loaded with gravel or iron ore. An afternoon and a night through the great Sahara desert, with the only roof of the starry sky until the city of Nouadhibou, on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, after having traveled the 700 km of glory.
Una ducha caliente nos reconforta a la llegada al hotel. Ese día, el octavo, descansamos y visitamos la reserva de Cap Blanc, intentando avistar la foca monje, una especie en peligro de extinción.
A hot shower comforts us in the city hotel on arrival. That day, the eighth, we rest and visit the Cap Blanc reserve, trying to spot the monk seal, an endangered species.

The ninth is the day when we complete the circle to Nouakchott, stopping at the Banc D’Arguin National Park on the way, a world-class area for migratory birds. We spend the last night at the capital.

Ruta de 10 días por las dos islas / 10-day route in both islands
Desde el aeropuerto internacional de Santo Tomé, nos trasladamos al hotel y pasamos la primera noche en la ciudad. Al día siguiente salimos en vehículos 4×4 hacia Praia Inhame, en el sur de la isla. Nos detenemos en la ruta visitando lugares sorprendentes como la Boca do Inferno, la “Praia Sete Ondas” y contemplando la maravillosa vista del pico Câo Grande, el símbolo visual del país.
From Santo Tomé’s international airport, we transfer to the hotel and spend the first night in the city. The next day we leave in 4×4 vehicles to Praia Inhame, in the south of the island. We stop along the route visiting amazing places such as the Boca do Inferno, the “Praia Sete Ondas” and contemplating the wonderful view of the Câo Grande peak, the visual symbol of the country.
El tercer día nos relajamos en Praia Inhame, disfrutando de su playa y de otras cercanas como Praia Piscina o Praia Jalé. Al día siguiente hacemos un pequeño viaje en bote hasta el islote de Rolas para ver el punto por donde pasa la línea del Ecuador. Los santomenses dicen que su país es el centro del mundo, ya que es el territorio más cercano a la intersección de ese paralelo con el meridiano de Greenwich… Por la tarde, viajamos a la ciudad de Sâo Joâo dos Angolares, deteniéndonos en Praia Pesqueira para visita al pueblo y su hermosa cascada. Dormimos en una encantadora posada de una antigua plantación. En su restaurante trabaja el chef más famoso del país, un maestro gastronómico de primer nivel.
The third day we relax at Praia Inhame, enjoying its beach and other nearby ones such as Praia Piscina or Praia Jalé. The next day we make a short boat trip to the islet of Rolas to see the point where the line of Ecuador passes. The Santomenses say that their country is the center of the world, since it is the closest territory to the intersection of that parallel with the Greenwich meridian… In the afternoon, we travel to the town of Sâo Joâo dos Angolares, stopping at Praia Pesqueira to visit the town and its beautiful waterfall. We sleep in a charming pousada at an old plantation. The most famous chef in the country works in its restaurant, a top-level gastronomic master.
El quinto día volvemos a la ciudad de Santo Tomé, deteniéndonos de camino en la playa de Micondó, una de las más bonitas de la isla. A la mañana siguiente nos dirigimos a la otra isla, Príncipe, en un vuelo de unos 35 minutos. Visitamos Santo Antonio, la agradable capital de Príncipe y posteriormente nos dirigimos a nuestro alojamiento.
On the fifth day, we return to the city of Santo Tomé, stopping along the way at Micondó beach, one of the most beautiful on the island. The next morning we head to the other island, Príncipe, about a 35-minute flight. We visit Santo Antonio, the pleasant capital of Príncipe and later we go to our accommodation.
Príncipe es un auténtico espectáculo de la naturaleza; la mitad de la isla es reserva de la biosfera. El séptimo día visitamos Praia Banana, inmortalizada en un anuncio de ron Bacardí, así como el mirador Nova Estrela, con vistas a la costa este de la isla, y Oké Daniel, otro mirador increíble en la costa oeste. Desde ambos se puede disfrutar de las impresionantes vistas de las cumbres volcánicas y del frondoso interior.
Octavo día: nos lo tomamos con calma, para bañarnos en cualquiera de las maravillosas playas de Príncipe, visitar una plantación o relajarnos en nuestro alojamiento. El noveno día, volamos de regreso a Santo Tomé, llegamos al hotel y tenemos la tarde libre. Durante el último día visitamos la ciudad de Santo Tomé por la mañana: el fuerte portugués, la catedral, el animado mercado y la tienda Diogo Vaz, donde se vende uno de los mejores chocolates del mundo. Por la tarde, vamos al aeropuerto para tomar el vuelo de regreso a casa.
Príncipe is real show of nature; half of the island is a biosphere reserve. On the seventh day, we visit Praia Banana, immortalized in an advertisement for Bacardi rum, as well as the Nova Estrela viewpoint, with views of the east coast of the island, and Oké Daniel, another incredible viewpoint on the west coast. From both you can enjoy the stunning views of the volcanic peaks and the leafy interior.
Eighth day: we take it easy, to bathe in any of the wonderful beaches of Principe, visit a plantation or relax in our accommodation. On the ninth day, we fly back to Santo Tomé, arrive at the hotel and have the afternoon free. During the last day, we visit the city of São Tomé in the morning: the Portuguese fort, the cathedral, the lively market and the Diogo Vaz shop, where one of the best chocolates in the world is sold. In the afternoon, we go to the airport to catch the flight back home.

Sólo hay un camino, hacia adelante… Podría escribir muchas líneas sobre cómo encontré el mundo 25 años después, tal vez merezca un libro, no lo sé…
Already in my peaceful refuge in the south of Spain, with the same concern as everyone else… It seems like an eternity has passed, but only a few days ago the African borders were closing in front of me… It has been an intense year, bittersweet after this ending, but wonderful as a whole. There is only one way, forward… I could write many lines about how I found the world 25 years later, maybe it deserves a book, I don’t know…

Estoy terminando el viaje y ya no disfruto de la libertad, al ver a tantos seres queridos encerrados… No esperaba que mi periplo africano terminara así, creo que estamos viviendo un momento crítico en la historia y tendremos que adaptarnos; posiblemente el mundo a partir de ahora no sea el mismo, otra vuelta de tuerca… Os mando fotos de mi penúltima etapa, Madagascar, un salto al mar, la singularidad, un sueño de la infancia. De Ifaty a Antananarivo, un país de contrastes abruptos y de naturaleza singular, única… Con mis publicaciones y fotos espero aportar un poco de frescura al claustro diario y espero veros pronto ¡Ánimo!
From a remote spot in Africa, I wait for the flight to take me back… Home? I am ending my trip; I do not enjoy freedom seeing so many loved ones in lockdown… I did not expect my African journey to end like this, but I think we are living a critical moment in the world and we will have to adapt; possibly the world will not be the same from now on, another turn of the screw… I send you photos of my penultimate stage, Madagascar, a jump into the sea, the singularity, a childhood dream. From Ifaty to Antananarivo, a country of abrupt contrasts and singular, unique nature… I hope to bring some freshness to the daily lockdown and I hope to see you soon, cheers!
