Timor Oriental ocupa el extremo oriental de la isla de Timor, entre montañas, bosques y una costa de aguas cálidas y transparentes. Timor-Leste occupies the eastern end of the island of Timor, between mountains, forests and a coastline of warm, crystal-clear waters. It is a small and still little-known country, where local traditions coexist with Portuguese heritage and the legacy of a recent history shaped by the struggle for independence. Its landscapes, with scattered villages, mountain roads and largely undeveloped beaches, retain a strong sense of authenticity and discovery: unexpected and wonderful.
Dili, la capital, se extiende a orillas del mar, protegida por las montañas que la rodean. Es una ciudad sencilla y tranquila, con mercados, pequeñas calles y una mezcla de influencias culturales que reflejan la historia del país. En sus alrededores, la ciudad da paso rápidamente a un paisaje más natural, con colinas, playas y pueblos costeros. Desde lugares como el Cristo Rei se contempla la bahía y se entiende bien la estrecha relación de Dili con el mar y las montañas.
Dili, the capital, stretches along the coast, sheltered by the surrounding mountains. It is a simple, laid-back city, with markets, quiet streets and a blend of cultural influences that reflect the country’s history. Beyond the capital, the urban landscape quickly gives way to hills, beaches and coastal villages. From places such as Cristo Rei, there are sweeping views over the bay, offering a clear sense of Dili’s close relationship with both the sea and the mountains.
Frente a Dili, la isla de Ataúro, a un par de horas de ferry, aparece como una prolongación de ese paisaje, pero en una escala mucho más tranquila. Sus montañas descienden hacia playas solitarias y aguas de gran claridad, bajo las que se encuentran algunos de los fondos marinos más espectaculares de la región. Pequeñas aldeas y senderos recorren la isla, donde la vida mantiene un ritmo pausado y cercano al entorno. Atauro ofrece así una imagen más serena y natural de Timor Oriental, lejos del movimiento de la capital.
Off the coast of Dili, Ataúro Island (a two hours ferry ride away) feels like a quieter extension of this landscape. Its mountains descend towards secluded beaches and exceptionally clear waters, beneath which lie some of the region’s most impressive marine environments. Small villages and trails cross the island, where life moves at a slower pace and remains closely connected to its surroundings. Atauro offers a more peaceful and natural side of Timor-Leste, far removed from the activity of the capital.
